Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste
Tom’s is a small company, employing fewer than two hundred people. It was founded in 1970 and then purchased by Colgate in 2006. Fortunately, Colgate has left Tom’s alone to manage their business according to their original principles.
Tom’s makes natural products. The toothpaste contains no sugar, sweeteners, or artificial flavoring. By contrast, I looked at a tube of Colgate toothpaste that I have on the shelf. It contains “flavor,” whatever that is, “saccharine,” and “propylene glycol.” The last ingredient is a less-toxic form of anti-freeze. One advantage of Tom’s toothpaste is that we do not have to worry about ingesting poisons when we use it.
I have been using Tom’s for years. The toothpaste comes in many flavors. On Amazon, you can find Peppermint, Spearmint, Fennel, Orange-Mango, Cinnamint, Wintermint, Apricot, Soothing Mint, True Mint, and Gingermint, among others. I prefer the Peppermint flavor, which is refreshing, but not overwhelming. The toothpaste is available in sizes from 1 ounce to 6 ounces.
I do not exactly live in a wilderness area, but my local stores no longer carry Tom’s. Fortunately, it can be found on Amazon and other web sites. The prices do vary from vendor to vendor, so check for the best price.

I kid! Anyway, this is good stuff. If you are looking for natural toothpaste give Tom’s of Maine a shot in a single tube. Return and buy in bulk here to save a little money in the long run. I prefer wintermint because my sinuses are sensitive to too more powerful mints.

This is my favorite toothpaste – in fact, the only toothpaste I’ll use. I love that it’s natural, but still has flouride and other necessary cavity-fighting and healthy ingredients. What makes it particularly genius, however, is the flavor. Most major-brand toothpastes are overwhelmingly, cloyingly sweet (how much sense does that make, to use sweeteners in your toothpaste?). Most Tom’s of Maine toothpastes, on the other hand, are overwhelmingly unsweet – they taste unnatural and leave your mouth without that clean, fresh feeling. The wintermint is exactly perfect: sweet and mint enough to be refreshing, but without any sort of aftertaste. Highly recommend!

Since I first tried this toothpaste I won’t use anything else. I love the flavor (no I don’t eat it) but my taste buds are in the general vicinity when I brush. It is a pleasant, not overpowering, flavor and scent. It cleans effectively and leaves the breath smelling good…and it’s better for the environment and you!
